Claude A. Guild vs George R. Archer (Methodist)
March 12, 1942
LaGrande, Oregon
(By C. B. Shropshire)
February 18 - 19.
Mr. Archer, a Methodist minister for 50 years affirmed: "Neither Jews nor apostles ever buried anyone in water as a mode of baptism; sprinkling is the mode of the New Testament." Bro. Guild very ably disproved the proposition by the scriptures, and also showed the inconsistency of Methodist doctrine on the subject of baptism. It was my privilege to act as chairman for the discussion, and I wish to inform the brotherhood that it need have no fear concerning Bro. Guild's ability to defend the truth or to expose error.
This is the first debate I have heard of being conducted between a gospel preacher and an exponent of denominational error in the State of Oregon. I hope we have many more with the same results.
