Early Arceneaux vs R.V. Sarrels (Primitive Baptist)
January 14, 1932
Anson, Texas
(By Dew Womack, Anson, Texas)
Week of November 16 at Anson, Texas, Early Arceneaux and R. V. Sarrels,
Primitive Baptist held at night only. Sarrels affirmed first four
nights: "the scriptures teach that every person who is regenerated, or
born of the Sprit of God, and washed in the blood of Jesus Christ will
be eternally saved."
Arceneaux affirmed the last four nights: "the scriptures teach that
baptism in water is a necessary condition to be performed by the alien
(or dead) sinner in order to inherit spiritual or eternal life." A
thousand came the first night and standing room only the rest of the
week. Dozens of gospel preachers were there and several Primitive
Baptists. The Abilene Christian College ran their bus almost every
night, loaded down with young preachers.
Both debaters conducted themselves in a fair way. No mud slinging and
dealing in personalities which often mar debates. Both debaters were
well known. Bro. Arceneaux has held several meetings. Sarrels was
practically reared here and has preached for his people since a boy. We
believe such debates will do good. They urged the people to accept God's
word.
