W. T. Boaz vs Claude H. Cayce (Primitive Baptist)
April 16, 1903
(By A. O. Calley, Hazel, Kentucky)
December 9-12 - large audiences heard Boaz affirm "The church with which
I stand identified is scriptural in origin, doctrine and practice." At
the end of the debate Boaz had convinced all who attended that he was
master of the situation. Cayce did not attack the strong arguments of
Bro. Boaz but put in his time reading lengthy articles from Alexander
Campbell and others concerning the faith of Bro. Boaz and what he should
defend. Cayce's negative work showed very plainly that Bro. Boaz did
not take the line of argument to prove his proposition that he had
prepared to meet. Cayce's negative arguments were as strong as those
that most Primitive Baptists present, but they were not effective
against Bro. Boaz's position. Boaz also affirmed "The Church of Christ
embraces all of the saved." Cayce admitted this to be true. Then Boaz
stated that unless Cayce could prove that he (Boaz) is not a saved man,
his proposition was sustained; that if he granted that he is saved and
that the Church of Christ embraces all of the saved, then he is in the
church, and the church that he is in is a scriptural institution. This
so confused Cayce that he could make but a poor defense. When Cayce took
the lead, Bro. Boaz completely covered him up with negative arguments.
The brethren were very much pleased with Bro. Boaz's defense of the
truth. Brethren, if you want a man to meet "Hardshells,"send for Bro.
Boaz; he is well prepared for this work.
