Guy N. Woods vs J. W. Hardwick (Primitive Baptist)
September 28, 1950
Dunlap, Tennessee
(By Glendal C. Grimes)
A few weeks ago the Primitive Baptists in this section challenge the church of Christ to debate. We accepted . After much discussion they decided to select J. W. Hardwick. He has had a good deal of debating experience and the Baptists accept him. The brethren selected Guy N. Woods. The debate will be Sept. 25-27 in the Sequatchie County high school building in Dunlap, Tenn. Sessions only at night.
Hardwick aff: "The scriptures teach that God gives eternal life to the dead alien sinner without a condition upon his (the sinner's) part." Woods aff: "The scriptures teach that faith, repentance, confession and baptism in water are conditions performed by the dead alien sinner in order to eternal live, or the new birth."
Glendal C. Grimes reports: Oct. 12, 1950. This is the first debate that has been in this county in many years and the first ever with the Primitive Baptists. Each session brought 800-1000 people. Order was maintained throughout, with the debaters conducting themselves gentlemanly. Although Mr. Hardwick is one of the best the P. B. have, he never met the issues. Many of bro. Woods arguments went untouched. Some P. B. have been hard to say they were "confused" pr they "realized" Mr. Hardwick did not answer bro. Woods' arguments. We believe much good has been accomplished.
