The Change Process

How many therapists does it take to change a lightbulb?  Come on now rack your brain.  It only takes one, but the lightbulb really has to want to change. Sadly, most of us recognize there are areas in our life that we need to change, but for whatever reason the vast majority fail to bring about any noticeable modification in their behaviors or habits.  In a recent study, conducted by the University of Scranton, it was shown that only 19% of those who make New Year’s resolutions keep them for a period longer than one year.  Even those who seek out “professional” help from a therapist, have an amazing drop out rate.  Over 70% of those who start therapy quit before they complete their third session. It would seem the only change most people like is money!

“Progress is a nice word.  But change is its motivator and change has enemies.” (Robert Kennedy)  Change involves a process, and it one that is designed to move us forward.: a progression toward a given objective. The beginning of change is of course recognition of the need to change, then for the individual to develop a new vision.  A goal.  For the child of God that objective or goal is Heaven.  I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 3:14)  However, in order to realize the prize change is required.  “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect” (Rom. 12:2, see also Eph. 4:23, 2Cor. 4:16)  The word transform carries the basic definition of change.  In fact Webster’s defines it, “to change the nature, function, or condition of: convert”  In short, Paul is talking about the process of conversion in Romans 12:1-2, or the process of change and the need to see it through to completion (see Hebrews 6:1 “press on to perfection/maturity” it is a lifelong process to be sure).
